Happy Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, from WeWrite! Co-founders JM Huck and Sheila Navarro. Join us in celebrating AAPI contributions and heritage, virtually or in-person. We invite you to the following AAPI Heritage Month engagements throughout the month of May!
May 5 - JM is leading a nature walk and creative writing workshop sponsored by Nevada Humanities. Two of her published works were “after” poems for their anthology, Sagebrush to Sandstone, including one written in response to a work by Stephen S.N. Liu, a 1993 Nevada Writers Hall of Fame Inductee.
May 11 - there is a free Asian Cultural Heritage Festival at Winchester Dondero Cultural Center, and JM will have a table for the Clark County Poet Laureate Program.
May 18 Nurturing Narratives will meet virtually 10:30-noon, contact Sheila @JMSN writers with any questions. Our inaugural cohort of AAPI creatives is now focusing on characterization and plot. If you haven’t yet, meet the cohort on our blog.
May 23 - Mark Padoongpatt, Director of the Asian and Asian American Studies Program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, is guest of the Humanities at Play program. Learn more about his work building the department and making UNLV a hub for Asian Studies research.
May 24 - Sheila is the guest writer for Clark County Poet Laureate Angela M. Brommel’s Friday Night Writes. Participants will read about Asian food and respond with food-centered prompts. Snacks from several Asian countries will be served!
May 25 - JM is joining the Nevada Humanities-sponsored collage workshop with Jeannie Hua. Jeannie’s most recent work exhibited at Core Contemporary Gallery was about her processing the history and marginalization of Chinese immigration in Nevada.
May 26 - Spotlight Poetry has an AAPI Showcase, follow their Instagram for updates. We are told there will be dances and other creative performances, as well as spoken word.
Bonus: NAAAP, to which Sheila has a membership, has several online offerings for anyone from anywhere to tune into. Don’t miss these great events: May 8 panel on South Asians, May 22 talk on Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders, May 23 panel on Transracial Adoptees and May 30 presentation on Resilience.
